THINKING Launches High-Voltage Ceramic PTC Thermistor Rated Up to 1,000 Vdc

THINKING introduces the new high-voltage type ceramic PTC thermistor, PPL25 series. With a maximum voltage of up to 1,000 Vdc, high energy absorption capacity, high heat capacity, improved Curie temperatures, and versatile resistance options, the PPL25 series enhances inrush current limiting performance in pre-charge and discharge circuits, enabling safer, more efficient, and more flexible high-voltage circuit designs.

Applications

Ceramic PTC thermistor can inherently withstand high voltages and absorb excessive transient energy because of its intrinsic material properties. Building on these advantages, the PPL25 series, engineered with enhanced voltage ratings and optimized performance features, is well-suited for demanding applications that increasingly operate at higher system voltages, including:

  • Electric vehicle charging station
  • Solar inverter and battery energy storage system
  • On-board charger
  • Power supply unit for server

Features and Benefits

Compared with using a fixed resistor as a discharging resistor, a ceramic PTC thermistor not only provides high voltage-withstanding capability but also reduces the number of components required. Utilizing the new PPL25 series inrush current limiter in pre-charge or discharge circuits can further bring the following advantages.

  • High energy absorption capacity:  Its maximum non-operating energy at 60 °C of 372 J to 992 J, together with a heat capacity of 6.2 J/K, enables each thermistor to absorb larger amounts of energy without a rapid temperature rise. This reduces the number of components required, saves board space, and lowers system cost.
  • Improved thermal endurance: With a Curie temperature range of 120 °C to 220 °C, the product maintains stable operation even in circuits with elevated ambient temperatures. This characteristic minimizes premature triggering and ensures reliable long-term performance.
  • Design flexibility: A wide selection of resistance values at 25 °C (250 Ω to 2 kΩ) gives designers the flexibility to select the most appropriate resistance according to pre-charge time requirements.
